Three workers were killed in an on-the-job accident at a privately operated waste transfer plan in Queens. According to authorities the men were overcome by toxic fumes and died in an accident involving a liquid-filled hole.
The work accident occurred in an 18-foot deep hole that had a 3 feet diameter and approximately 4 feet of liquid. The workers, who included a father and son, were subcontractors. It was reported that one man fell into the hole and one of the other workers attempted to save him with a rope and ladder. The third worker fell into the hole when he tried to rescue the first two men.
When firefighters arrived at the scene, they found the three workers face down in the liquid. According to Deputy Assistant Chief John Sudnik, a firefighter went down into the hole with a breathing apparatus and pulled all of the bodies out by attaching them to a harness.
The air was tested and authorities discovered toxic levels of hydrogen sulfide. Chief Sudnik said that hydrogen sulfide is “a common byproduct of decomposed organic material. In that type of atmosphere it is very toxic.”
M. & P. Reali Enterprises, doing business as Regal Recycling Company, runs the commercial plant, according to state records. When reporters tried to call the company, the man who answered the phone said that they had no immediate comment.
