A Staten Island car accident involving three vehicles along the Martin Luther King Expressway leaves an 18-month-old girl fighting for her life. The incident took place at approximately 12:00 PM on Monday afternoon, January 4, 2010, in Graniteville.
The toddler, Gina Marie Fantauzzi, 18 months, of Staten Island, was rushed into emergency surgery at Richmond University Medical Center following the accident that involved three vehicles near exit 10 along the Martin Luther King Expressway in Graniteville. A hospital spokesperson was unable to provide Fantauzzi’s condition, citing hospital policies.
Rescue workers performed CPR on Fantauzzi at the scene of the accident. “They were able to get the child conscious and breathing again,” according to Fire Department spokesperson Frank Dwyer.
Fantauzzi was riding in her mother’s car at the time of the accident. Her mother, Kathleen Fantauzzi, 32, of Staten Island, was also transported to Richmond University Medical Center. It was reported that she suffered leg injuries sustained in the accident.
According to police, the other two vehicles in the accident were minivans. The drivers, a 47-year-old man and a 51-year-old man, suffered minor injuries. Both drivers were cited for driving without a valid driver’s license.
The three-vehicle accident is still under investigation by the New York Police Department Accident Investigation Squad. The cause of the accident has not been made available.
