
A Staten Island accident along the West Shore Expressway in Huguenot leaves two people injured and one under arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol. The incident took place at approximately 8:00 PM on Tuesday evening, November 24, 2009.
According to local police, the accident happened when a blue 2003 Ford Windstar minivan slammed into a black Chevrolet Avalanche sport utility vehicle (SUV) in the New Jersey-bound lanes of the West Shore Expressway. The force of the impact caused the Ford to come to rest atop a metal guardrail along the shoulder. The SUV suffered extensive front-end damage.
The driver of the Ford minivan, Steven DeFilippo, 22, of Prince’s Bay, was transported to Staten Island Hospital where he was treated for injuries sustained in the wreck.
The unidentified driver of the SUV also suffered injuries in the crash. However, the injuries were not considered to be serious.
DeFilippo was placed under arrest for driving while under the influence of alcohol.
According to officials, the accident caused the expressway to be shut down and commuters to be rerouted as police and rescue workers responded to the scene.
The Staten Island accident is still under investigation by local authorities.
