A Staten Island accident involving a sport utility vehicle (SUV) leaves a shopping mom pinned when the SUV loses control and crashes through the front of a busy Dollar Tree store. The freak accident happened around 1:30 PM, on Sunday afternoon, December 13, 2009, in the Marines Harbor store.
When rescue workers arrived at the scene, they found the woman pinned underneath the SUV. They had to lift the vehicle in order to free the woman who had been waiting in line for a cashier.
She had two young sons with her at the time of the accident, including a toddler who was in the shopping cart when the SUV crashed through the glass front of the store and into the woman, according to witnesses.
Rescue workers transported the unidentified woman to Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton. She was treated for unspecified injuries sustained in the accident. Neither of the children suffered any injuries.
Holiday shoppers were stunned as they witnessed the crash. “She didn’t see the car coming through because her back was to the front,” said Wonder Wiltshire, of Rosebank, who was standing next to the victim at the time of the accident.
The Staten Island accident in Mariners Harbor is still under investigation. Local authorities have not released the identity of the driver of the SUV. The cause of the accident has not been determined and no other injuries were reported.
