One Person Killed in Staten Island Drunk Driving Accident

A Staten Island drunk driving accident leaves one person dead and another hospitalized. The incident took place at approximately 2:30 AM on Sunday morning, November 22, 2009 on the Staten Island Expressway.

According to police, Lucia Negrete, 25, of the South Park Slope section of Brooklyn, was a passenger in a car that apparently lost control and slammed into a guardrail along the Staten Island Expressway near the Richmond exit. She was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The car’s driver, Jose Sandoval, 25, also from the South Park Slope area, was injured as well. Rescue worker transported Sandoval to Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze where he has been listed in stable condition.

According to a law enforcement source, Sandoval’s blood alcohol content measured was at .239 percent, nearly three times the legal limit. The legal limit is .08 percent. He has been charged with criminal negligent homicide and operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. He is expected to be arraigned in Stapleton Criminal Court.

The incident is the third consecutive weekend that someone died in a car crash on Staten Island.

The accident is still under investigation by local authorities. No other vehicles are believed to have been involved in the crash.
