A Staten Island car accident involving a hit-and-run driver leaves an elderly lady seriously injured after she is struck by a car. The incident took place at approximately 4:00 PM on Saturday afternoon, December 26, 2009, outside the Staten Island Mall.
According to a New York City Police spokesperson, the victim, Diana Fazio, 73, of Sea View, was struck by a black 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche in the mall’s parking lot. According to reports, the driver of the Chevrolet attempted to pass a car that stopped at a stop sign in front of him, and struck Fazio.
According to court papers, Fazio suffered a broken hip and required surgery as a result of the accident. She will be required to walk with a cane for the reminder of her life.
The driver, Vullnet Vrlaku, 26, of Mariners Harbor, fled the scene but was spotted by a witness. However, Vrlaku turned himself into authorities three days later. “I didn’t see her. She came out of nowhere,” he told police.
According to William J. Smith, a spokesperson for District Attorney Daniel Donovan, Vrlaku was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident.
The Staten Island hit-and-run accident is still under investigation by local authorities.
