
A Southampton car accident involving a transit bus claims the life of a man after the bus collides with a car. The incident took place on Tuesday, February 2, 2010, at the intersection of County Road 51 and Lake Avenue.
According to investigators, a 2000 Ford Focus entered the intersection and was struck by a Suffolk County Transit Bus that was northbound on County Road 51. The driver of the Ford, Michael Brown, 21, of Greenport, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the bus has been identified as John Bravata, 56, of Ronkonkoma. Bravata, along with 14 passengers on the bus, were transported to either Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead or to Brookhaven Hospital in East Patchogue where they were treated for injuries sustained in the accident. However, there were no serious injures reported.
Commuters were inconvenienced for almost four hours as crews investigated the accident scene and removed the two vehicles involved in the wreck.
The fatal Southampton accident is still under investigation by local authorities. However, officials indicated that there are no charges are pending.
This is a tragic and unfortunate accident and our thoughts and condolences go out to all of those that have been impacted by this incident.
