In 2003, John Geoghan, a convicted child sex abuser and former Roman Catholic priest, was killed after being strangled by a fellow inmate in prison.
The inmate, 37-year-old Joseph Druce, was charged with Geoghan’s murder. Druce was serving a life sentence at the same facility where Geoghan was strangled.
Geoghan, a 68-year-old man, was assaulted around noon and pronounced dead at 1:17 PM at a local hospital. A spokesperson from the prison said that Druce was immediately identified and isolated.
The Boston Archdiocese had paid $10 million to settle a lawsuit by 86 plaintiffs who claimed that Geoghan had sexually assaulted them. An attorney who represented some of the alleged victims of Geoghan said that the victims would have “liked to rather see Father Geoghan complete his sentence in jail, would have rather seen justice served, would rather have seen him involved as a defendant in further criminal trials.” He went on to say that Geoghan’s death was “eerie” and “unsettling.”
Geoghan was found guilty in January 2003 of molesting a boy in a swimming pool ten years earlier and sentenced to 9 to 10 years in prison. It has been reported that more than 130 people accused Geoghan of sexual abuse during his 30-year career in six parishes.
