Someone is killed by an impaired driver every 30 minutes according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. That figures means that on average, 50 people are killed every day, which makes drinking and driving one of the most frequent violent crimes in the country.
College students, ages 18 to 24, are often victims of drunk driving accidents and account for a high percentage of deaths each year. According to a national survey, 2.1 million college-aged students admitted to driving under the influence of alcohol the past year. In New York, college students frequent the bars, night clubs and parties and then get behind the wheel drunk. In Tompkins County, there were 417 DWI arrests in 2008 and 101 DWI arrests in Cortland County.
In response to the epidemic of drunk driving accidents, Tompkins Cortland Community College will be hosting a national traveling exhibit called “Friends,” which will show the unintended consequences of drunk driving. The exhibit focuses on the lives of seven upstate New York college students who were involved in a fatal alcohol-related accident in November 2000 near Colgate University. The exhibit is supposed to raise awareness among college and high school students of the impact of DWI crashes.
The traveling exhibit is free and open to the entire community. It includes photos, possessions, interviews of victim’s friends and family members and visual and audio recordings.
