The family of a woman who died on the floor of the psychiatric ward at Kings County Hospital Center will receive $2 million from New York City. The deceased woman waited more than 24 hours for treatment and a videotape showed her lying on the floor for more than an hour while workers did nothing to help her.
New York City’s Health and Hospitals Corporation accepted full responsibility for 49-year-old Esmin Elizabeth Green’s death and stated that it will take action to solve issues involving crowding and the size of the staff in the mental health services department at the hospital.
Green’s death occurred during a time when concern was rising over the conditions in the psychiatric service at the hospital, which is the only mental health provider for the majority of poor people in Brooklyn.
Green was from Jamaica and immigrated in the late 1990s to earn income for her six children back home. She suffered from depression.
The lawyer representing Green’s family called the wrongful death settlement “fair and reasonable,” but the family was planning on continuing to press for accountability.
The hospital system has gone through numerous reforms, including construction of a new Behavioral Health Center Pavilion.
