A man fell 30 feet through a rusted out metal plate on a sidewalk in New York on Saturday, August 15, 2009. Vincent Riggio, who is a relative of the Barnes & Noble founder, had stepped out of the Off-Track Betting parlor to smoke a cigar when he fell through the sidewalk hole.
Riggio, a 59-year-old man, was not seriously injured in the accident and only sustained cuts and bruises. He was lifted by firefighters from the basement where he had fallen.
According to witnesses, Riggio had basically stepped out of the parlor and disappeared.
“He came out, he had a cigar, he stepped on the platform and he fell,” said deliveryman Freddy Chew. “I looked down the hole. He was down there, squatting down. There was a lot of dust.”
Chew called 911 and Riggio called his wife. He tried to calmly explain to his wife on the Jersey Shore what had just happened to him. His wife, Joann, said that he told her he fell through a hole about 30 feet.
During the rescue, a fire fighter was lowered into the hole by a rope and placed a harness around Riggio to hoist him up.
Riggio was taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital for treatment for his non-life threatening injuries.
