A Flanders car accident claims the life of a 43-year-old woman after she loses control of her sport utility vehicle (SUV) and slams into several trees. The incident took place at approximately 7:00 PM on Tuesday night, February 9, 2010, on County Road 105.
According to Southampton Town Police, Beth Gruebel, 43, of East Quogue, was traveling at excessive speeds northbound on County Road 105 when she lost control of her SUV. The SUV flipped over and hit several trees. Rescue crews pronounced Gruebel dead at the scene from injuries sustained in the accident.
Police believe that her speed and the fact that she may have been driving on at least one inadequate tire may have been contributing factors in the single-car wreck. They also indicated that Gruebel was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.
Evening commuters were inconvenienced for over three hours as crews shut down County Road 105 to investigate the accident and clean-up the crash scene.
The fatal Flanders accident is still under investigating by local authorities.
This is an unfortunate accident and a type of event that is always hard on the families who are affected. We send out condolences to all of those who have been impacted by this crash.
