FDA Warns Some Weight Loss Products Are Tainted

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration expanded its nationwide alert regarding tainted weight loss products that contain undeclared, active pharmaceutical ingredients.  Some of these ingredients include fenproporex, fluoxetine, furosemide and cetillistat. 

Some weight loss products, including Herbal Xenicol, Slimbionic, Perfect Slim and Xsvelten have been found, along with 72 other weight loss products, to contain these undeclared pharmaceutical ingredients.  According to the FDA, these tainted weight loss products create a serious risk to consumers. 

Janet Woodcock, M.D., director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research was quoted in an FDA press release as saying that some weight loss products “contain undeclared ingredients and in some cases, contain prescription drugs in amounts that greatly exceed maximum recommended dosages.  Consumers have no way of knowing that these products contain dangerous drugs that could cause serious consequences to their health.”

The first warning from the FDA regarding weight loss products occurred in December 2008 and the list of weight loss products was expanded on January 8, 2009 and in March 2009.  The list now contains 72 products and is being updated regularly by the FDA.

Many of the products included in the FDA’s warning are marketed as dietary supplements and some claim to be “natural” or contain only “herbal” ingredients, even though they contain potentially dangerous ingredients not listed on the products’ labels or promotional advertisements.  The FDA has not approved these products and they are considered illegal.
