New York Crane and Equipment Corp., the owner of the crane that collapsed on East 91st Street in New York in May 2008, had been warned about fixes. According to email correspondence, a Chinese company that was contracted to repair a critical component in the crane, warned New York Crane 10 months before the fatal accident that it doubted its ability to adequately perform the wielding required to repair the machinery.
The Chinese Company, RTR Bearings, was still hired by New York Crane despite the warning, to weld the tower crane’s damaged turntable. The email messages showing the correspondence between the two companies surfaced in lawsuits filed by the families of the two construction workers killed in the crane collapse last year.
According to investigators, the weld in the re-built turntable failed, which caused the top of the tower crane to break away and fall to the street, killing the construction workers, Ramadan Kurtaj, 27, and Donald C. Leo, 30. Attorneys who are representing the families said that the email messages are part of a long trail of evidence showing negligence and corruption by the crane company, the developer of the residential tower and the city’s Buildings Department, which have all been named as defendants.
Investigators have also been aware of RTR Bearings’ role in repairing a bearing ring for the turntable and they are trying to determine whether that weld contributed to the fatal New York crane collapse.
The crane collapsed on May 30, 2008 when its cab and boom snapped and crashed into a nearby building.
