When you survive a traumatic brain injury, it is normal to believe that you have overcome the worst and can move on with your life. Unfortunately, there are complications that follow serious brain injuries, including seizures.
People who have suffered moderate to severe traumatic brain injuries are at risk of experiencing late posttraumatic seizures. These seizures often involve uncontrollable body movements, sensations and awareness. Seizures are believed to be caused by a temporary electrical imbalance in the brain. While some patients will experience what is known as early posttraumatic seizures, because these occur within one week following the injury, some people will experience seizures at a later time.
A study was conducted that examined the medical records of 647 patients with moderate and severe brain injuries. The goal was to identify risk factors for late posttraumatic seizures. Researchers looked at 2 years worth of medical data and discovered that the biggest factor associated with late posttraumatic seizures had to do with the amount of direct brain tissue damage. According to the research findings posted on the Brain Injury Association of America’s website, “Certain CT Scan results, types of traumatic brain injuries, especially those with foreign body penetration and multiple contusions, types and numbers of brain surgeries, and an early posttraumatic seizure appear to also be factors associated with a higher risk for late posttraumatic seizures. “
