“To his dog, every man is Napoleon; hence the constant popularity of dogs.”
-Aldous Huxley
If you take a walk in Central Park on any given day, you should notice more than a fair share of dogs of every breed and stature. This shouldn’t surprise anyone, as dogs can be wonderful companions. But having a dog as a pet carries real responsibilities. There is the obvious responsibility of feeding and caring for them, as well as their need for regular exercise. But dogs should also be trained properly as part of responsible dog ownership, and there is more to this than simply teaching them to fetch or roll over.
Bites from dogs can cause real physical damage to victims. They can cause serious disfigurement or even death. And any breed of dog, no matter how small or seemingly harmless, is capable of biting.
What follows is a list of some of the more dangerous breeds of dog. This is not to scare you away from purchasing one, but rather to serve as a reminder that the behavior of dogs is often a reflection of their owners. If you purchase any dog in general and one of the dogs on the list in particular, be sure that you have them properly trained. The consequences of doing otherwise can be quite severe.
Dalmatians: Although the public image of this particular breed of dog has been particularly bright as of late, primarily due to their sunny portrayal in children’s movies, these dogs can be quite dangerous. They weigh in at between 40 to 70 pounds, and have been known to cause severe damage when they bite.
Boxers: Despite their relatively fearsome looks and reputation, Boxers are actually quite friendly dogs. But their lean build and agility can make them quite dangerous if they aren’t under control. Another thing to consider is that they are known as a quite headstrong breed and can be hard to train.
Presa Canario: These dogs are primarily used a guard dogs that were initially trained to guard and fight cattle. They are especially fearsome, and a victim who gets attacked by one of these dogs essentially has no chance. They weigh in between 80 to 115 pounds.
Chow Chow: This particular breed of dog can fool you in that it looks more comical than dangerous. It has very puffy fur and the facial features of a basset hound. But poorly trained and bred Chow’s can be very aggressive, and considering that their average weight is between 50 and 70 pounds, an attack from one of these dogs can be very dangerous.
Doberman Pinscher: These dogs are intelligent, sleek, alert, and very dangerous. They will attack if they perceive their owners, territory or family to be in danger, so perhaps they aren’t the best dogs to have if you live in a city, where a Doberman can perceive a threat around every corner.
Malamutes: These are extremely energetic dogs that need to be exercised regularly to be happy. Again, the size and speed of these dogs makes them particularly dangerous in the event of an attack.
Huskies: Although these dogs generally have sunny dispositions, they have been known to attack, and they also have been known to cause some fatalities.
German Shepherds: These animals are particularly fearless, and are often used in police and military K9 units.
Rottweillers: The territorial instinct in this breed of dog is particularly honed, and it’s size and muscle makes it quite dangerous.
Pit Bulls: There have been enough well-publicized incidences of pit bulls mauling in even killing people in the news over the years, so there is no real need to go to deeply into detail. But if you choose to have a pit bull, make sure that it is properly trained as it can possibly be.
