New York Crane Accidents – Who is Responsible?

Over the last few years, there have been numerous crane accidents in New York and throughout the country. One of the most notorious New York crane accident cases occurred on Manhattan’s east side and killed seven people. In 2008 alone, a total of nine people were killed when tower cranes collapsed in New York.

There is no question that working on a New York construction site is dangerous. According to the Cranes and Derricks Advisory Committee, more than 60 percent of crane accidents in the United States are caused by contact with power lines, inadequate crane assembly and disassembly and poor ground conditions. Component failure is also a contributing factor in many crane collapse cases, which can lead to serious injuries. Negligence is often to blame when these situations occur and the responsible party can be held liable.

It can be difficult trying to determine who the responsible party is following a crane accident. Even though there is usually one entity that administers the construction site, not everything on the site is controlled by that particular company. There are often hired workers, suppliers and subcontractors. Crane accidents can be caused by the actions of numerous individuals and/or companies.
