How to Avoid a Serious Scaffolding Accident

Scaffolding is an important tool used in construction and there is no question that without this temporary frame, it would be difficult to complete certain jobs. It is believed that scaffolding was even used in ancient times by the Grecians, Egyptians, Nubians and Chinese.

As construction continues at a fast pace in New York, scaffolding is often put together quickly and sometimes corners are cut on safety. The U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) released a list of supported scaffold safety tips. OSHA defines supported scaffolds as frames that “consist of one or more platforms supported by outrigger beams, brackets, poles, legs, uprights, posts, frames, or similar rigid support.”

According to OSHA, the following safety measures are needed to prevent injuries from a scaffold accident:

  • Guardrails must be included on platforms 10 feet or higher to protect workers and prevent falls.
  • Planks have to be overlapped on a support at least 6 inches, but not more than 12 inches.
  • Working platforms need to be planked near the guardrails.
  • Uprights, poles, frames, posts and legs must be on base plates or a firm foundation. They also have to be braced and plumb.

OSHA has also stated that users of scaffolds need to be trained. This training should incude:

  • The hazards associated with different types of scaffolding.
  • Load capacity and maximum weight.
  • Understanding how to recognize scaffolding defects.
  • Hazards of scaffolding falls.
  • Dangers associated with overhead lines.
  • Hazards of falling objects.
