Why Bigger, Heavier Trucks May Cause More New York Truck Accidents
The trucking industry plays a vital role in our economy. Large trucks are commonplace on the roads and highways, but these massive commercial vehicles are also to blame for many New York truck accidents.
A lot of debate has been going on whether trucks should be allowed to be larger and heavier. There are reasonable arguments made on both sides of this issue. The Truck Safety Coalition, a truck safety advocacy group comprised of truck crash survivors, is strongly opposed to the possibility of larger trucks. This group even has created a website devoted to this very topic.
According to the Truck Safety Coalition’s website, www.stopbiggertrucks.org, addresses the problem this way:
“They’re coming: bigger, longer, heavier, deadlier trucks. Unless Congress and state legislatures take action now, these trucks will threaten more American lives and damage more of the streets, bridges, and highways we travel every day.”
So, how dangerous are large trucks? When compared to single-trailer trucks, double-trailer trucks are 32 percent more often involved in fatal accidents and 200 percent more likely to be involved in interstate highway crashes. Some studies have suggested that making trucks longer and heavier could increase safety risks per vehicle mile traveled.
Overweight trucks are dangerous and what is frightening is that about 10 to 20 percent of the commercial trucks on the road today are over the weight requirement. These vehicles could be traveling near you on a New York highway.
