New York Drunk Driving Accidents Are a Major Public Threat

There is a major threat to the New York public and it has nothing to do with terrorists or other perils. New York drunk driving accidents have become a huge nuisance and have claimed the lives of too many people. What is so frustrating about alcohol-related accidents is that they are usually preventable. If only drunk drivers would refrain from getting behind the wheel.

One tragic story that took place at the end of January 2010, shows the seriousness of driving while intoxicated. According to WPIX-TV in New York, police reported that a Long Island woman was arrested for driving drunk, following a Suffolk County car accident that killed two passengers.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has some alarming statistics posted on its website, which draws attention to the seriousness of drunk driving. The following is a summary of these disheartening facts and statistics:

  • Nearly one-third of all drivers who have been arrested or convicted of drunk driving are repeat offenders.
  • Someone is killed in a drunk driving accident every 45 minutes, on average.
  • It has been estimated that 40 to 90 percent of stores sell to underage individuals.
  • 72 percent of impaired drivers who are injured in crashes are never charged.
  • 11,773 people were killed in drunk driving crashes across the country in 2008.

If you or someone you love has been injured in a New York car accident that involved a drunk driver, you may be able to pursue legal action. Drunk drivers need to be held accountable for their reckless behavior.
