Driving While Drowsy Can be Deadly

There is no question that falling asleep behind the wheel can be deadly. Thousands of car accidents are thought to be caused by drowsy drivers every year. The Drowsy Driving and Automobile Crashes report, sponsored by the National Center on Sleep Disorders of Research (NCSDR) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), analyzed the dangers of drowsy driving.

A drowsy driver is considered to be impaired. That means that his or her reaction time to dangers on the road will be slower than drivers who are not fatigued. According to the report, sleepiness can impair “reaction time, vigilance, attention and information processing.” When someone is extremely tired, he or she will have a difficult time trying to resist falling asleep at the wheel.

One of the biggest dilemmas faced when looking for ways to stop drowsy driving is that there is no test that measures or quantifies the level of sleepiness. Generally, drowsiness is identified as a factor in a car accident based on inferential evidence. For example, the average car accident caused by a drowsy driver will involve the following factors:

  • The auto accident takes place at night
  • The crash is usually serious
  • A vehicle veers off the road
  • The driver does not try to avoid the collision
  • The driver is alone in the car

The risk of an accident caused by drowsy driving can be high depending on the amount of sleep the driver had, driving patterns, use of medication that can lead to sedation, unrecognized sleep disorders and alcohol consumption.
