Q: What is a brachial plexus injury? My baby suffered this birth injury and I’m not sure what it is.
A: A brachial plexus injury, also referred to as Erb’s palsy, is characterized by arm weakness or paralysis. This birth injury is the result of the nerves being stretched around the infant’s shoulder during birth.
This type of birth trauma can occur when there is excessive pulling on the arm during birth or because of raised shoulders in a breech delivery. For the most part, infants recover within six months, but in some cases, surgery will be required to repair the nerve damage.
