Q: Is there a minimum ratio of staff to residents in New York nursing homes?
A: No. There currently is no minimum nursing home staffing ratio requirement, which is frightening, as it can lead to understaffing and ultimately nursing home abuse. According to the New York Office of the Long Term Care Ombudsman, “in New York State the requirement is that staffing must be adequate to meet the needs of residents.”
When a nursing home is understaffed, the residents can become neglected. As a result, they may suffer from nursing home neglect injuries, such as bed sores, medication mix-ups, overdoses, malnutrition, dehydration and other ailments. Understaffing can also cause the staff to become stressed and overwhelmed, making them short tempered and possibly abusive to the residents.
