Steps to Filing an Injury Claim Based on New York’s No Fault Insurance System

There are pros to living in a state that has a no fault insurance law.  What is great about the law is that you are able to obtain a certain level of compensation for your medical bills, no matter who was at fault in the Long Island car accident.  However, you need to know what steps to take following your crash to ensure that you are able to receive your benefits.

The first thing that you need to do is review your insurance policy.  You should have 30 days from the date of your auto accident to notify your insurance company.  Once you make this notification, it gets the process going.  You will need to provide the insurer with information regarding the accident, such as the time, place and facts about the crash, including your injuries.

After you notify the insurance company, they will send you an application for no fault benefits.  Be sure to fill it out completely and return it in a timely manner.

It is important hat you follow through with your scheduled doctor visits and recommended medical treatment.   Be aware that the insurance company will usually schedule an independent medical examination, if your injuries require continuous treatment.

If your injuries are serious, you may be able to pursue additional compensation against the driver who caused the accident.  For more information, contact an experienced Long Island auto accident lawyer at our office at 800.734.9445.
