New York Deaths and Medical Errors

An investigation conducted by the Hearst Media Corporation estimates that preventable medical mistakes and infections claim the lives of approximately 200,000 people each year in America. The number has increased dramatically in the last 10 years since the Institute of Medicine issued a report estimating that 44,000 to 98,000 people were dying annually due to medical errors.

A major issue is the fact that these numbers may not be accurate. Many states have yet to implement a standard or mandatory reporting system for medical errors leading to injuries. However, there is an effort to address this issue. Even President Barack Obama has pushed for a broader implementation of electronic medical records.
