Toyota Motor Corp. has recalled over 4 million of its vehicles due to complications with the accelerator pedals. Imagine driving down the road and having the accelerator pedal becoming stuck, causing you to crash at a high speed, because you could not stop the vehicle. That is exactly what has been reported.
Recent reports show that the defect has been linked to at least five deaths and two injuries, including a highway patrol officer and three of his family members when the accelerator pedal became stuck, causing the vehicle to reach speeds in excess of 120 mph, crashing, and killing the four. The government has also received over 100 additional reports of incidents where the pedal may have become stuck.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Toyota has developed a solution to fix the problem. The massive recall will deal with modifications to the accelerator pedal and floor mats, which is believed to be a contributing factor to the problem.
Toyota models that have been recalled include the Camry, Avalon, Prius, Tacoma, and the Tundra, to name a few.
