Head Injuries Sometimes Cause Seizures

A study found that moderate to severe traumatic brain injury sometimes causes posttraumatic seizures.  The research findings were posted on the Brain Injury Association of America’s website.

According to researchers people who have sustained moderate to severe brain injuries are at risk of experiencing late posttraumatic seizures (seizures that happen more than one week following the injury).  These episodes often involve uncontrollable body movements, sensations and awareness.  Medical experts believe that these seizures are the result of a temporary electrical imbalance of the brain.

Medical records of 647 patients were analyzed to see if there was a link between an increased risk of late posttraumatic seizures and head injuries.    Researchers looked at medical data over a 24-month period.  One of the main factors identified during the study had to do with the amount of damage to the brain tissue.
